Storybook Sunday on Tuesday

I am linking up with another amazing teacher for a linky for storybooks! This is a linky party to share storybooks we have read o are going to read! I love these linky parties because they are a great resource for educators and parents to follow and build up their libraries. I believe that children need to be immersed with great literature as much as possible!

So thanks to Paula's Place, here is another great resource to find great literature!

The storybook I will be reading this week is in honor of the winter olympics! This book features our favorite character, Tack the Penguin! Tacky is competing in the Winter Games!

Here is the storybook and it's link:

Check back later this week to see what we do with this book and to see what we do for the Olympics!

Valentine's Day 0n Tuesday!

Well, we finally got to celebrate Valentine's day even though we had a 2 hour delay due to the weather. Thanks to Mother Nature, we were out of school on Thursday due to snow. Friday was a professional development day and Monday was President's Day! So my little Kindergators finally got to celebrate Valentine's Day today, Tuesday, February 19th!

We read four books today! They loved these books!

But the two they loved the most were:

The children were allowed to choose paper of their choice and make their very own Love Monster! I provided no sample because them to make their own monster!
Here is what they created and I have to say I love them all!!!!!

The kids also grabbed a handful of candy heart erasers and graphed them!

The kids loved this! I found the erasers and the awesome red heart plates for the kids to sort their hearts on at Target!

We also had an estimation station! The kids had to estimate how many hearts were in our bucket. The closest estimate got a Valentine Day book to bring home and keep!

Here is a group making their estimations!

The hearts were found at the Dollar Tree. The box to the side was found at Really Good Stuff. This box was decorated by the kids and was their mailbox for their valentines.

Here is the link for these awesome mailboxes:

The children also made heart get well cards for a classmate who had surgery today.

To end our day, we passed out our valentine's and watched Be My Valentine Charlie Brown!

Not too bad for a day that was shortened by two hours!

Must Read Monday Linky Party

I am linking up with the wonderful Teaching Maddeness for a worthwhile linky! Must Read Monday is a linky where we post the worthwhile books that we read in our classroom. This is an awesome resource for educators to share and learn new literary texts to read in our room! This is a great way to build our libraries with worthwhile literature!

This week I would like to share two books that I read in my room. Since we missed Thursday due to the snow, we ended up doing Valentine's Day today! I read 4 books but my students absolutely loved these two the best!

The first one they enjoyed was Pete the Cat Valentine's Day is Cool!

Of course, the first thing my kids did when I brought out this book was yell, "Yay, It is Pete the Cat!" They absolutely love Pete the Cat!

Pete the Cat does not think Valentine's Day is cool and this is something that many of my boys related to. They thought it was a yucky day as one of my little kindergators stated. But thanks to his friend, he realizes that there are many cats who are important who deserve a valentine. Then he makes valentines for all of the groovy cats that he knows. He gets so excited about making valentines and realizes that Valentines Day is actually pretty cool! He also learns from his friend that giving a valentine is nice but showing the person is worth much more! This book teaches the kids a great lesson!

My other book is Love Monster written by Rachel Bright!

Monster lives in Cutesville and he is the only one who is not cute! He feels so out of place that he goes out in search of love! He wants to be loved for who he is not for how he looks. He looks everywhere for love and becomes discouraged and just gives up. On his way back, he finds another monster to love. The message in this story is that love finds you when you least expect it. It does not become a reality just because you are looking for it.

Throughout the book, my kids just kept saying Awww and they felt so bad for this lonely monster as he searched for love. They were so happy when he found someone who loved him for him not for his looks!

Not only was this such a cleverly written story but it has bright illustrations that are pleasing to the reader!

Well, these are my two books to share. Click below to see the book choices of some awesome educators!

Guest reader

We had the most amazing guest reader to start I love to read month! Mr. Rue comes and reads to kindergarten almost every year. He entertains them as he reads. The children interact with him. The hour flies by. The two books he reads are Fox in Socks and One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish!

A week of Abraham Lincoln!

This is my favorite time of year to teach! I love teaching my kindergators about American History especially about our 16th President Abraham Lincoln. This post is going to be a long one and also a link to the linky party, Monday Made It  hosted by 4th Grade Frolics!

So let's begin with what we did on Monday with Abraham Lincoln! We are going to call our Monday

We started off our Monday, by singing the song, my amazing student teacher taught the students when she was here at the beginning of the year! I just made this slide to share it with you. Click on the slide for the link to download this if you would like!

We read a Lincoln book

and talked bout what we know and what we learned. We then did our follow me activity for Abraham Lincoln!  Here they are:

Here is a sample of Lincoln writing!

For Math, we made a life size Abraham Lincoln and measured him with snap cubes and then we compared our height to his. He was 126 snap cubes tall!

Then we made our hallway display!

This was all on Monday!!!!!

Here is the rest of our week of Abraham Lincoln activities!!

We drew Lincoln and measured our drawings with snap cubes and recorded them!

Click on the picture below to download the measuring paper to attach to your lincoln pictures for a measuring activity!
We read lots of books!!

We celebrated his birthday on Wednesday by making hats and reading emergent readers and watching a movie from my president padlet. The link for the padlet is below!
