Statue of Liberty

Storybook Ball!!

On a personal note, My daughter and I attended the Storybook Ball with a friend and their son on Saturday Night at the Please Touch Museum in Philadelphia. This was amazing! Adults and kids were to dress up as their favorite characters. I went as Snow White and my daughter went as Brave!

While there, the kids got to explore the museum, eat lots of great food, ride the carousel, take horse and carriage rides, dance to a band called The Plants (They were awesome!) and grab a gift bag.

There were characters everywhere! Curious George, Peter Rabbit and of course, Princesses!

Finally, they had a Statue of Liberty section! I could not leave without getting pictures for my kids!!! Here are pictures of Emmy as the Statue of Liberty and a picture of the torch made out of a modge podge of items!! It was breath taking!!!

Statue of Liberty

Oh my!! Did we enjoy learning about this magnificent statue!!!! We just kept on researching and finding the most amazing information about the Statue of Liberty. We also watched a great video from Amazon (Thank goodness I am a Prime member!!!)

I used several resources and adapted them to my teaching style. We used the Statue of Liberty craftivity from Deanna Jump. I adapted it by making it into a follow me activity. I love these!!! They all had the same amount of paper yet they all look different!

We also wore a crown and had a torch and took our pictures! We also made a crown and torch to bring home!!! This was from the unit by Kim Adsit!!

Praying Mantis Frenzy

We have begun our insect unit with a what I think I know, what we learned and our misconceptions chart. We read two books, a nonfiction book on Praying Mantis and a fiction book called Manuela a Playing Mantis by Don Freeman. We compared the fiction and nonfiction books. The kids did a great job with this. They were truly amazed at the facts about a praying mantis.

Then we made and wrote about Praying Mantis. I took the Praying mantis I saw in Deanna Jump's Blog and made it into a follow me activity. I love these activities because all of their projects look different. They all start with the same size paper, scissors and glue. They follow me as I cut and glue. I love the end results!

I have an empty Praying Mantis egg and we passed it around for them to look at it.  They loved this and thought it was the coolest thing. So I ordered an egg from  Insect Lore and hopefully we will be able to see a live egg hatch before the school year ends!!!

STEM Showcase

Our leprechaun traps were on display at the first annual STEM (Science, technology, Engineering and Math) showcase at the high school on Thursday, March 21. Four students came and shared their trap with the audience!!! I am so proud of the job they have done!!!

Very Hungry Caterpillar Day

I absolutely love the book, The very Hungry caterpillar by Eric Carle! When I opened my email the other day and saw that March 20 was Very Hungry Caterpillar Day, I got very excited and so did my students!


We did a lot of awesome activities from some Hungry Caterpillar units by Robynn Dr and Kidsrcute.

The kids made hungry caterpillar hats. These are made out of a small paper plate they colored red, yellow paper for eyes, two large tongue depressors colored purple, green paper for the nose and a green crayon to color inside the eyes. They then colored a sentence strip green. They were hot glued together and voila a hat.

They had a special attendance for today. They all had their own hungry caterpillar and they had to drag it into the chrysalis. This is on the smart board.

They made pictures by tearing construction paper with their hands. These came out so cute!! here are just a few of them!

 

 

 

We made a large caterpillar to write the beginning middle and end of the story in. we are talking about the difference between fiction and nonfiction and discussed this was one of the differences.

I will post a picture when we have completed it!

How do you catch a Leprechaun??

 My students did an awesome job on their home school connection projects!! They were to go home and create a leprechaun trap. We have been working on our wood and paper unit in Science. They were to use some of the materials we have discussed in class when making their trap!!

 We researched and learned about Leprechauns!  Here are our questions and the answers we found!!! 
 
What do leprechauns really look like?

Leprechauns are 2 feet tall. They wear red or green. They look like little old men.


What do Leprechauns do?

They are shoemakers. They make shoes for the fairies.

What do leprechauns eat?

They eat lucky charms, potato peels and brussel sprouts. Their favorite food is rice.

 

 Do leprechauns swim?

No they are afraid of water.

Do they slide down the rainbow?
They do only on St. Patrick's Day.

Are they easy to catch?

Female leprechauns are harder to catch then male leprechauns
