Daily 5 Book Study Chapter 9

I can not believe that the book is over! I have enjoyed reading this book by the 2 Sisters! They have another book that I think I am going to dive in to soon.

I love the quote the Sisters started the chapter with!

Chapter 9 deals with Daily 5 being used in "Special " Circumstances!

The Sisters discuss using Daily 5 in several different circumstances! Here are my outtakes from the chapter!

Barometer Students:

We all have a barometer student in our class. These are what the sisters refer to as the challenging students! We must remember that if we help these students and give them the tools they need they will be successful!!!

But we also have to do the following:

1. Stay out of their way! This is hard for me! but I will be working on this this year!
2. Make sure we teach the 10 steps to Independence. Remember there are 10 of these, we do not skip them or decide to pick and choose which ones to teach. There are 10 and we need to teach all 10.
3. If they are misbehaving, have them stay in at recess for a little while to practice appropriate behaviors.
4. If this does not work, you mat need to have a special spot for them to sit, a timer to help with their stamina, whatever tools you feel will help these students be successful!
5. Make sure they pick Good Fit Books!!!

Substitute Teachers:

We all know how crazy it is to get ready for a substitute! We worry if our plans are done and how our students were going to behave or folow our routines. It is very important for us to make sure the routines are kept as normal as possible. It should be like you are there. But we need to make sure that we write detailed plans. These should be specific Daily 5 plans that can be used with every substitute.this provides consistence for the students!

New Students:

AS the school year goes on, we all get a new student here or there. We need to kep in mind that not all teachers do Daily 5. So when the new students arrive, review the I Charts and the 10 steps. This is a great time for review for the entire class! Another great plan to have in place is to have students be the buddies for the new students. They can teach them the ropes!

Parents:

Open Communication is necessary for this to be successful. Explain all procedures and routines to the parents. Send home Daily 5 information. Keep them informed. This will insure that all those involved understand the Daily 5 process!

We must remember that we must trust our kids! I know this is hard at times but we must loosen the ropes and allow them to choose. In order for this be done successfully, we must teach all 10 steps of independence! You can do it!

Well this is the last post of our Daily 5 Book Study! Check out TPT, there are so many resources available! Also, we have had several free resources throughout our book study!

Daily 5 Chapter 8 Math Daily 3

I am linking up for chapter 8 in our Daily 5 Book Study. I can not believe that we only have one more chapter left! I have learned so much from this book and I can not wait to get into my classroom and implement the Daily 5!

This chapter is about The math Daily 3. The previous chapters have been focused on ELA. I have to say I love The Math Daily 3. I implemented this last year in my classroom. I teach First Grade and I was team teaching. So all I had to teach all day was math and Science. I wanted to teach it in a different way then the traditional way so I researched and I combined The Math Daily 3 with Guided math and I have top tell ya, my kids soared!

When launching these components, we launch Math By Myself first. The focus will be on building stamina woking independently with math games. Stamina is being built. I Charts are created.
Next component launched is Math Writing. Focus is on expressing themselves mathematically using pictures, words, and equations. This is done similar to work on writing in Daily 5. Allow them to choose a comfortable area. Great for Math Journals.
Then we launch Math With Someone. The focus is working with someone else collaboratively and appropriately.

All of the components have I Charts Just like the components of Daily 5 do. I have created I Charts for the Daily 3 and posters if you would like them click on them below to download.

We only have one  more post left in our book study! In case you missed my other posts, here are the links:

Daily 5 Book Study Chapter 7

Hey Ya'll! I am very excited to be hosting this chapter of our Daily 5 Book Study! I am co-hosting this chapter with the awesome Nicole of All Things Apple in Second.

I love the wrote that the 2 Sisters chose to open up their chapter! I am going to make this a part of my classroom! So feel free to download the quote below!

Chapter 6 was all about launching Read to Self. Now the students have been working on this area and building stamina it is time to begin launching the rest of the Daily 5.

So when do we introduce the next Daily 5 area? well, when the students have shown the ability to work independently during Read to Self and their stamina has increased then we introduce the next area, which is Work on Writing.

Here is a little cheat sheet that shows the amount of minutes the students should be able to work independently during Read to Self before the next area is launched!

The next area we launch is Work on Writing. if you read the first edition, the 2 Sisters had introduced Read to Someone next but they researched and found that Work on writing is very important and needs to be introduced and launched earlier.

One thing to remember is that Writing Workshop and Work on Writing are not the same thing. You still need to do writing workshop. Work on writing is used to work on the writing they are doing during their course of study. if they are working on narrative writing in writing workshop then they will continue this during Work On Writing. But they do not have to just work on this type of writing. Remember Daily 5 is full of choice so they may choose to do another writing activity during Work on Writing.

Here is a writing menu I created for Work on Writing. Please feel free to download it if you would like!

When we go to launch the other Daily 5 areas, make sure you review the expectations, the I charts from the other areas, desired and undesired behaviors, and the purpose for each area!

Brainstorm with the students what the behaviors of each area are, demonstrate and model the desired behaviors, practice and then the independence seeking begins.

In Work on Writing, writing is done immediately. We step back and let them write. If they get off task, we signal and regroup.

Now that we have two areas launched, we continue practicing and then introduce choice. Once they have the stamina in both areas, hold a huddle and tell them that they are in charge of the order they do their areas. This is their choice.

Now for the last step, Check In. This is when we ask what they did and they share what they plan on working on first. There are several different ways to keep track of this. Some have charts that they hang in their room, others have individual charts that they color in the area they choose. This is up to you, whatever works best for you.

Well, once all areas have been launched, we need to make sure that there are certain things in place and routines before we release them into the Daily 5 Choices.

1. There needs to be an even number of students at Read to Someone
2. Dismiss the kids individually to go to their choices
3. When at the gathering place, students wait until they are dismissed as a group
4. Students are released as a whole from the gathering place.

Now that we have discussed the launching, I am just going to do an overview of what each of the final 3 areas may focus on:

Here is a list of reminders to hang in your word work area if you would like!!

I know this was a long post but the launching is very important to the success of your Daily 5 Implementation!

Here is our schedule to follow along for the rest of our book study.

Daily 5 Book Study- Chapter 6

I am so excited to be linking up with our host, Sarah's First Grade Snippets, for Chapter 6 of the Daily 5 Book Study! As I read this book, my fears are subsiding and this is no longer a scary implementation for me! I am still nervous but I am not scared like I was before I began this journey! So here we go with........

This is when we would model and train the kids on how to choose a successful spot for them to sit and read independently. This is a spot where they know they will not be distracted and will read independently.

They are also taught the three ways to read a book:
1. Through picture
2. Through words
3. Through retelling

Then they would also be taught how to choose a good fit book!

We, as teachers, would model how to brainstorm and come up with ideas to write about in our writing journals.  They will have writing journals to write in daily.
They would have writing notebooks and they are allowed to personalize them anyway they choose.

When setting up the notebooks, cut the corners of 3 to 5 pages. This is where they would write their think about its- ideas for journal.

Think about its are the topics they brainstorm and underneath the topic are ideas to write about that topic.

There is a lot to this foundation lesson! We discuss, model and practice EEKK.
Elbow
Elbow
Knee
Knee

This is the way the kids are to sit when they are reading with someone.

Then we must model how we hold the book properly when reading with someone else. The book should be placed between the two readers as they sit side by side.

Then we must discuss and model appropriate voice levels when in this area. We call the correct voice level, a private voice. Loud enough for our partner to hear and low enough so that we do not bother those around us.

Then we discuss and model how we read as partners.

When reading the same book, partners can:
1. I read, You read- one partner reads a page and the other partner reads the next page and so on.

2. Choral Read- Read the page together

When reading different books, partners can:

1. I Read You Read- Both partners have a good fit book, one partner will read a page of their book, mark it with a marker and then the other reader will do the same.

When reading a book together, the students are trained through teacher modeling to use the following strategies to choose who reads first:

1. Good Manners- One partner asks the other politely if they would like to start.

2. Let's Make A Deal- When they both want to read, one partner says how about if we read your book first and then we can read mine.

3. Rock, Paper, Scissors- The winner gets to read first.

4. Youngest First- birthdate determines who reads first

5. Alphabetical Order- Whoever has a name with the first letter closest to the beginning of the alphabet.

First, They must learn how to care for the technology. This is when the rules are gone over and they are taught how to set up and clean the equipment.

We model how to listen and follow along using either our eyes or our reading fingers.

Teach them how to take turns. When their story is done, their partners story is then heard.

They will learn how to set up and clean up their activities. They will be trained how to choose the materials- what words they will be working on.

Teach them how to choose a successful spot. A spot where they will be able to sit and work successfully.

So there are the foundation lessons that we will need to teach before we go into full implementation of Daily 5. Through modeling and practice, these lessons will become internalized and the students will be able to do these areas successfully!

Daily 5 Book Study- Chapter 5

I am linking up with Inspired Owl for chapter 5 in our Daily 5 Book Study! as I delve deeper and deeper into this well written resource, I am seeing the benefits of Daily 5 and have been asking myself, why haven't I implemented this is my classroom yet!

There are 3 ways to read a book and we as teachers must model all three ways. The three ways to read a book are:
1. Read with pictures
2. Read with words
3. Read with retelling

It is important to model each of these methods before implementing Read to Self. They recommend that you model and introduce the first two on one day and then the third method on a day by itself. Modeling is very important. Show the students how you think as you read. Think out loud for them to see what you think about as you read.

After you read the books using these methods, have them share with their elbow partners what they noticed when you read. What were you thinking as you read. Then have them tell you what their partners said. This will show them that it is important to listen to others talk and to be able to share what the other person is saying.

Upon implementing Read to Self, which is the first component that is introduced no matter what time of year you begin Daily 5, the students are to pick books for their book box. These books are called good fit books.

Below is a poster I made for my classroom for Good Fit Books. You are free to use it if you like! I have also included my I chart and poster for this component.

Once we model how to read a book and they choose their good fit books, then we begin to build their stamina.

Once we have implemented this component, we begin to add the other foundation lessons.

Here is the schedule for you to follow along with our book study!

Daily Five Book Study Chapter 4

I can not believe that we are already on Chapter 4! I love reading this book! If you do not have this book, click on the book below to go to Amazon:

One thing discussed was to have a signal to gather the children together for the Huddle or to gain their attention. I love to use a wireless doorbell. You can keep it in your pocket so it is accessible anywhere you go. This is great if you have a Responsive Classroom as well.

It is very important to document their learning. Making their learning visible and permanent will increase their success! Chart Racks are great for this. Keep the charts up that you make with them so they can refer to them for review or a refresher!

Tools are needed to make this a successful experience for students!Sand timers, regular timers, and books are just some of the tools needed. Remember, you must train the students so they do not view any tools that you put out as toys. These are not to be played with. These are to build their stamina, increase their independence!

Book Boxes are needed so that the students can choose their 3 to 10 good fit books for the week and store them in one spot. Organization is important. Book Boxes allow them to bring their
books with them.

I found these magazine holders at IKEA for 5 for $1.99. I bought enough for each student to have one!  Click on the picture below for the link to Ikea!

These are charts that write down what they should be doing during their time at that area. It is a great reference tool!

I made some I-Charts for my implementation of Daily 5 in my room this year! I have included a link to them if you would like. Just click on the picture below!

Make sure you have a spot in your room designated as a gathering place for your learning huddles. it must be big enough for all of the students to sit comfortably. A huddle should only last the number of minutes equivalent to the age of your students. This is the spot where you will all transition to in between Daily 5 Rotations. You will teach a small focus lesson here!

Your classroom should be organized and be set up so that the students can find comfortable places to work independently! Supplies should be readily available and the environment should feel welcoming, safe and secure!

We discussed earlier the importance of having a quiet signal! I use a wireless door bell in my class room.

So for my giveaway, I am giving a doorbell away  to one lucky reader, so please enter the rafflecopter below!!!
