Sit Spots... a must have and a giveaway!!

I love Sit Spots! When I first saw them, I thought what an amazing product! A way to create rows of seats for my kiddos on my carpet without using masking tape and a sharpie! I don't know about you, but my custodians did not like to see the tape on the carpet.

So of course, I began to think.... How else can I use these amazing products? I wanted to use them in a way that nobody has. I thought and thought and then wham! A Math Floor. I called Joyce from Sit Spots who is absolutely amazing. Told her what I would like to do and then thanks to her, my thoughts became a reality! Mu kiddos love the math floor. My administrators have never seen anything like it and I get kudos in my observation.

So here's what I did for my Math Floor:

My number line- odd numbers are blue circle sit spots, even numbers are red circle sit spots. The line is a strip made from sit spots. The number line goes up to 30.

Here are my ten frames! The kids fill them with yellow and black sit spot circles. They roll a pair of dice. The first number is a group of yellow circles they add to the ten frame and the second number is the group of black circles they add to the ten frame. The ten frame and the number sentence shell are made from black strips of sit spot material.

My rekenrek is made from red and white Sit Spot ovals and black Sit Spot strips.

Number bonds are made from yellow and white Sit Spot circles and black Sit Spot strips.

So Sit Spots are much more then just a spot for your kids to sit on. They can be interactive. So be creative!!!

Aquariums

Today we started to put together our aquariums. We talked about the different levels and compared the levels of an aquarium with the levels of a terrarium. We added the cabomba plants. Next, we add guppies and snails.

Here we are making our aquariums:

We got our Terrarium plants and ......

So, on Wednesday, I received a box that contained plants for our terrarium. I opened it up and left it as is because we were not going to get the terrariums made until today. In the center of the box was a white container that looked like an ice cream container. On the bottom was the label chameleons. I thought they were a kind of plant and left it in the box.

Well, today was the day we were going to make the terrariums. We take out the container and it was awfully light. We did not know what could be in the container and we thought no way can it be an animal because our kit does not call for lizards. We only put in millipedes and box beetles that ill not be in until next week.

Well, can you imagine the surprise when I opened the container and out popped all these little green heads. Yep, they were anoles or american chameleons.

They were scared, of course and when they heard someone scream, out they hopped. So here I am in a skirt, crawling around on the floor, trying to catch these quick little critters!

Having to think fast, we made a home for them out of a plastic terrarium container from our kit, some gravel and moss. These are all from our science kit.

Not too bad for having to make it quickly!

Of course, my student teacher (she is awesome by the way!) started to research these awesome little guys and what we found out was amazing! First, they needed a new home and they had to be fed.

So after work and picking up my 7 year old, we go to find a pet store. we found this awesome one called Pet Kare in Bear, DE! They were amazing and after they heard the story of how I became their mom, they gave me an awesome discount on their new home! Here it is!

This is a big difference. So they got a new home and some crickets to eat and a new friend because when we were there we saw tree frogs in the cage with the pet store's anoles. Of course, I had to get one for them. So now they have a new friend! Just to let you know, the little critters came with me and the awesome staff set up their new home for me and put them in there for me as well!

Chapter 11 Worksheets Don't Grow Dendrites Book Study

I am linking up with What The Teacher Wants for this awesome book study! We are discussing chapter 11, Music!!!

I really loved this chapter! I believe that music is such an important tool to integrate into your classroom. When I attended a Brain Based Professional Development opportunity with Eric Jensen, the guru of Brain Based Teaching, Music was stressed. He discussed the importance of having music of different tempos for different tasks in the classroom. (Fast paced for transition, classical for writing, etc!)

I love using Music in the classroom, especially during Math time. The music makes it easier for the kids to remember the concepts. Here are just a few of the songs I use:

April is an awesome month and a busy month! I love Baseball and it is opening week for baseball! What better thing is there then to watch the Red Sox play ball!

My daughter, the light of my life, Emmy, was born on Tax Day! 7 years ago my life began!!!

Blogging is my third favorite thing! I am so glad that I began this adventure. Through blogging, I have been able to collaborate with so many amazing teachers! This is an awesome world to belong to!

My Schedule #2getherwearebetter

I am linking up for this awesome party hosted by Angie of Lucky Little Learners and Ashley of Schroeder Shenanigans in Second Grade. This month we are sharing our schedules. As I was reading the various schedules posted by my fellow teaching buddies, it is amazing how different they are!

I taught in Florida and Georgia for 14 years before I came to Delaware and have been teaching here for years and just the difference I have encountered with scheduling is truly eye opening.

So here is my schedule as of this year. I have been a Kindergarten teacher for 20 years and this is my first year in First Grade and the schedule is very different just from going from one grade level to another.

Now just a few things about my schedule:

• I am team teaching in First Grade
• I teach my homeroom math and science on the morning and then I get a whole new set of 20 kids in the afternoon.
• We have to teach Math RTI for both groups.
• Math teachers at my school also have to teach ELA RTI.
• We are given the times that we are to teach each subject. The only input we have is what we do during the block we are given.

Currently April

Loving: I am officially on Spring Break! Although I will miss my kiddos, I need a break this year!

Thinking: April is a busy month. I have so much left to do to get ready for Easter and my little one turns 7 on Tax Day so I have to get going on her party and special day!

Wanting: I have a craving for a Caramel Frappe from McDonalds. I do not eat McDonalds but I has a frappe and now I am hooked to those!

Needing: Although I am on break, I have so much to do today that I really need to start my day! :(
